The ECU – What is it?

The Engine Control Unit is the ‘brain’ of the engine. Amongst other things it reads, understands and makes decisions based on the accelerator pedal demand angle, engine temperature and oxygen content in the burnt exhaust gases. Dependant on this data, it will control the correct quantity of fuel to provide a mix of fuel economy, performance and emission control.

What is ECU Remapping?

The practice of remapping is to first read the ECU’s processor of a vehicle’s standard map and then to adjust various parameters within that map. As an example: fuel pressure, boost pressure (turbocharged engines) and ignition advance. When carried out correctly, this process will successfully unlock engine performance.

ECU programming will improve power and torque figures, increase throttle response and widen the power-band, resulting in a more flexible engine and a much sharper drive.

Another major benefit of remapping is a reduction in fuel consumption. Extra torque at the bottom of the rev range requires less throttle input on acceleration and when maintaining steady speeds.  The vehicle can also be driven in a higher gear at slower speeds, thus reducing revs, and this also applies to driving when fully loaded, towing or driving through elevation changes

The obvious question of course is: ‘Why don’t carmakers fine-tune their own ECU’s?’ Well, large manufacturers sell vehicles across various markets that have extreme climates, different tax/emission regulations and diverse fuel quality. They have to take all these factors in to consideration and therefore need to make substantial compromises in their tuning set-up. However, without facing such restrictions, Topgear Tuning is more precise; we can safely optimise outputs thus unlocking engine potential.

ECU Remapping is a safe process. It is just allowing the engine to perform as it can and should do without the compromises.

Bee Cool Performance and Motorsport are proud to be a dealer for Haltech Management Systems.

We have a unique service offering for this and can do many things that others in this field will not be able to do. We offer ‘Full Bench Tuning of ECU’s’ onsite at our premises (Which nearly no-one does!), and we have ‘New State Of The Art OBD Tuning Equipment’  using Bespoke files written for the car, whereas most people simply download files written previously from the internet possibly with faults, bugs etc. in those files. We however, offer Bespoke files written individually for each car, allowing for upgrades such as Decat Systems for Race/Track cars, Turbo & Supercharger Upgrades, Induction System and Exhaust System Upgrades, to name a few. We are now appointed Dealers for custom ECU Systems with  ‘Haltech Management Systems’ (http://www.haltech.com/), they offer a product selector here; http://www.haltech.com/ecu-selector/

  • What is ECU Re-Mapping and Tuning?

All Modern cars have a computer called an ECU that controls how your car is powered under every demand condition and load.

Most Manufacturers limit your car’s true potential for various reasons, including releasing ‘Special Editions’ with more power. They also have to comply with all the Worldwide Emissions Laws with every model which can be unleashed with a remap.

Our ECU Tuning and Re-Mapping process is designed to re-program your car’s ECU to maximize it’s potential within safe limits and avoid premature failure. All of our Tuning Maps are impossible to be identified from the original even by the Manufacturer!

  • Re-Mapping Benefits

There are multiple benefits to the re-mapping process, including increased Horse Power, higher efficiency and miles-per-gallon (MPG) ratio, improved and responsive drive, increased torque, easier towing and smoother, faster acceleration.

  • How much does it cost?

Most cars made between 2000 and 2011 can be re-mapped by On-Board Diagnostics (OBD). We do not use ‘generic’ maps from the internet, like some providers.

Our re-maps are custom written for each vehicle by our Specialist File Tuners and put onto your car usually within 90 mins.

For this type of re-map, we charge £210. Some cars will have a double ECU, and require the ECU to be removed and a chip to be fitted. For these types of cars we offer a two day turnaround, and the cost is £285.

  • What about other tuning providers?
